July 12, Stage 11: Albertville - La Toussuire - Les Sybelles 148km
Stage 11 ventured into the heart of the Alps with two HC climbs early on and a Cat 1 mountain top finish in the ski resort village of Les Sybelles.
Many riders considered this to be the most challenging stage in the Tour de France this year, combining leg breaking climbs with technical descents and a lengthy 20km Cat 1 ascent to the line.
Vincenzo Nibali, of Liquigas Cannondale, delivered a very strong performance for the day and finished 5th in just over 4:45hr. His effort in Stage 11 moved him to 3rd in the General Classification, only 2:23min off Sky’s yellow jersey holder, Bradley Wiggins.
Liquigas Cannondale and Nibali have generously provided sections of the SRM race file below. Just before the second HC climb Vincenzo moved to a new bike splitting the race file in two sections. We do not see speed on the second bike, however his power and cadence provide great insight and inspiration.
Liquigas Cannondale: Vincenzo Nibali (Stage 11)
Col de la Madeleine greeted the riders very soon after the start with an altitude gain of over 1,500 meters. Nibali reached the summit in just over 1 hour with an average power of 322 watts. He held a steady cadence average of 88rpm at an average speed of 22kph. The ascent was over 24 kilometers in distance and Nibali burned nearly 1,000 kilocalories in the effort.
The second HC climb began only 10 kilometers after descending Madeleine. Col de la Croix de Fer also required over an hour of solid work with 333 average watts from Vincenzo. He held an 84 average cadence up the 23 kilometer climb which again required over 1,000 kilocalories.
Nibali ascended the final 20 kilometer climb in 45 minutes with an average power of nearly 360 watts. He maintained his consistent cadence average of 88rpm and made was able to make an aggressive attack in the last 10 kilometers with a 1,113 watt peak. His 5th place finish behind Rolland, Pinot, Froome, and Van Den Broeck pushed him onto the GC podium with Wiggin’s adding “Vincenzo Nibali has shown that he will be dangerous throughout the race. He is improving and his attacks have had a real cutting edge."
